I was both a student and a teacher prior to Jimmy Carter's Dept of Education. I've seen some good come from it. But mostly I've seen education degenerate into bureaucratic, structured indoctrination.

I don't claim that public education in the past was without fault, but the Dept of Ed has only made things worse. And more expensive.

I find it interesting people frame their beliefs as truth, and others perceived wrong beliefs as indoctrination. When, spoiler alert... it's all indoctrination. Your beliefs projected out are a form of indoctrinating others, just as much as mine would be. Its implied that I have a different perspective.

I don't disagree. Any opinion, when expressed, can be seen as indoctrination.

I do make the distinction that centralized 'opinion making' qualifies as inordinate indoctrination. Many feel that building consensus is a goal unto itself. I don't. Don't indoctrinate Renoir into painting like Rembrandt. We are all better off if Renoir paints like Renoir.

I can say that I never discouraged disagreement in my classroom. I respected a student's mental effort to think differently from what I was teaching. I wish there was more of that.
