Perhaps there might be a link between the intrusion of an authoritarian "unified presidency" and distrust of the federal government. The abdication of Congress as the "voice of the people" to dictate to Trump and his federalization of the military to intervene in state affairs also contributes to "distrust" of the overreach of the Federal Government.

I think all of that is true and the reasons can both me relate to the actions of one branch and be politically thermostatic, with distrust and skepticism changing based on who wields power — to an extent. A sizable portion of Democrats skepticism has risen over the last couple decades that transcend presidencies. All of that is clear. It seems to me that this conditionality makes for a stronger case for decentralization, or at the very least, greater mediation of governing majorities at the federal level.

Two things… Get corporate and special interest money out of politics. Then get rid of the two -party winner take all system and replace it with a multiparty parliamentary system requiring a coalition government. It works well in Canada and Europe and can certainly do a better job than the oligarchy we’ve created here.
